Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, is a non-ablative procedure, meaning that it does not damage the surface of the skin, but it gradually and naturally restores a smooth, even surface by diminishing (or eliminating) age spots on the face, hands, and chest. Skin rejuvenation can also be performed on other parts of the body, such as the neck and back.
Our Harmony® Intense Pulsed Light system delivers high-intensity pulses of broadband light that are different from the narrow band light of lasers. The Intense Pulsed Light is delivered to the deeper parts of the skin (dermis) and leaves the superficial aspect of the skin (epidermis) untouched. The thermal effect of IPL also causes the production of new collagen, leading to improvement in fine lines.
There is little damage to the skin surface, and several treatments may be required. For best results, approximately 4 to 6 treatments are performed monthly. Side effects can include transient redness and temporary dark pigment resembling coffee grounds in the treated area, which naturally sloughs off within 5 to 7 days. Minimizing sun exposure can reduce these side effects. Professional grade sunscreen of SPF 35 is recommended daily through the duration of treatments.
